New figures from Cambashi, an independent IT industry analysis and marketing firm, forecast that in 2012 the world market for technical applications software in the manufacturing sector will recover to 2008 levels (see figure).
This market declined nearly 16% in 2009. Recovery in 2010 is estimated to be about 4%, but with substantial variation between countries. Measuring local market growth in US dollars gives China the lead in 2010 with 21%, with Australia, Brazil, India, Poland and South Korea all achieving US dollar growth in excess of 10%.
These leading growth rates indicate opportunity, but in some cases exchange rate variations are significant. Absolute growth volumes help deliver a complete picture. Cambashi’s latest Market Observatories, released in the second quarter of 2010, identify the top five growth markets in 2010, measured not by percentages but by the volume growth viewed in US dollars, as China, USA, South Korea, Japan and India. Cambashi’s Market Observatories have tracked activity in the technical applications software space for over ten years.
Looking forward
The large size of markets in developed economies mean that even modest growth rates deliver large increases in the total size of the market.
For 2011, countries with leading growth volumes viewed in US dollars are forecast to be the USA, China, Japan, Germany and India, which between them, by this measure, will account for about 80% of global growth of technical applications software in the manufacturing sector.
Peter Thorne, Managing Director at Cambashi, said, “High growth rates can create opportunities to sell software in regions and niches that competitors have not yet found. A successful battle for market share in large, but slower growing markets can deliver more incremental business. Technology vendors need to study the numbers to pick strategies that match the nature of the opportunity.”
These results are available in the latest version of the Cambashi Industry Observatory, which merges company data with original research to estimate technical applications market size in about 100 sectors in more than 45 countries.
