Build on success “Lord Drayson came to hear from Cambridge entrepreneurs at first hand,” said Mike Evans, research director at Cambashi. “We were able to make a number of suggestions that would improve focus on sectors where Cambridge leads the world, such as software for engineering and manufacturing.”
The entrepreneurs pointed to significant successes of innovative UK companies in engineering, design and manufacturing and the value of increasing government officials’ awareness of this. It was recognized that while there were many good government initiatives, there are more opportunities to help companies grow faster and to a greater size. For example, David Cleevely, Chairman of ABCAM suggested improving government procurement processes to eliminate any unconscious bias against innovative small companies.
Continuing effort The entrepreneurs agreed to reach out to their network of contacts in the Cambridge cluster to identify specific ways that the government’s initiatives could be improved in order to generate faster growth for innovative companies. For his part, Lord Drayson committed to continue the dialogue.
